Types of liposuction

There are many ways to perform liposuction surgery, the method suggested for you may vary on multiple factors like medical history etc. In general, all techniques will use a tube called a cannula to break the fat cells and a suction device called an aspirator to do the suction of melted fat. The main difference in all these techniques is mainly how you melt the fat.

Liposuction Surgery

    Tumescent liposuction
  • The most commonly used technique as the side effects like bleeding, swelling, and pain are reduced with it. In this procedure, a solution with anesthesia is injected into the fat cells using the cannula, due to which they increase in size and burst and it becomes easier to suck them out using the aspirator.

Similar to tumescent is the Wet and the Super wet techniques. The super-wet technique is different from the wet in terms of the amount of solution injected used. In super wet the amount of solution injected is almost equivalent to the fat being removed.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) also called Lipoplasty
  • In this technique, the fat cells are liquefied using sound waves, which are applied to the fat using the cannula. Once the fat is liquefied, the suction tube is used to suck it out.

If the sound waves used to melt the fat are sent in a pulsed manned then it is called pulsed ultrasound-assisted liposuction. The pulsing of sound waves ensures the overheating does not happen which may lead to skin burns.
This method is said to be a more efficient way of removing fat than the suction-based technology. It is also said to do the same with very less blood loss and minimal swelling post-op.

Power assisted liposuction (PAL)
  • In this technique, the cannula has an oscillating tip. This makes it easier for the doctor to target specific cells of fat and remove them.
Laser-assisted liposuction
  • In this thermal energy is used to burn the fat cells which are then sucked out using the aspirator.
  • Understanding which technique will be best suited for you will depend on your consultation with the physician. Various factors like your weight, medical history, and skin condition will be taken into consideration to decide the kind of surgery

    Risks around liposuction

You may think that it is only a cosmetic surgery and may not have risks surrounding it. However, it is still a surgery and you must be aware of the risks that may occur in severe conditions. Some of these are:
    1. Excessive bleeding. Though some bleeding is expected there have been cases where the fluid loss is drastic and patient may need to be put on a drip.
    2. Most doctors will administer a local or general anesthesia which for some people can lead to complications.
    3. Shock.
    4. Infections post-surgery.
    5. Fat embolism. In this during the surgery tiny pieces of fat may tear away and later block blood flow to that area of the body.
    6. Fat removal may not be evenly done.
    7. Skin changes or damages.
    8. Damages to other organs during surgery.

Although with any good physician these risks may be a rare occurrence it is always best to know and discuss all these concerns with your consulting doctor.

Laser Liposuction Surgery Gives Maximum Results At Minimum Risk

Laser Liposuction Surgery Gives Maximum Results At Minimum Risk There have been some advances in the liposuction treatment and Laser Liposuction Surgery is one of them. Laser Liposuction Surgery is a type of plastic surgical treatment which is used to remove the excess deposits of fat from the body with help of laser equipment with minimum risk. Fat Reduction Areas: Laser Liposuction Surgery is a procedure that can be used to remove packets of fat deposited at various places in a human body including the hips, buttocks, abdomen, thighs, knees, etc. In addition, Laser Lipo can be done on body parts like face, neck, back, breasts, abdomen and other flabby parts. It will not be possible to remove the completely desired fat levels from an area of body as a minimum amount of fat is required for the body. Patient undergoing Laser Liposuction Surgery can have an ever lasting change in the shape of their body if they work out regularly as the body cannot replace the fat cells.

The Procedure: In this Laser Liposuction Surgery, a doctor takes very low intensity laser fibre and inserts it directly into the area of body parts where the fat is deposited. The laser fibre sends the energy which erases the fat cells in that area. Contrary to the existing mythical prevalent notions, laser does not have any effect on other areas of the body. The whole process of Laser Liposuction Surgery takes up to an hour for an area. The entire treatment procedure is absolutely free of pain with no loss of blood. What’s more, there are no marks left on the body of the patient after the completion of the treatment. The whole Laser Lipo Surgery can be performed with the help of local anesthesia.

Benifits : It has many advantages for the patients. The main benefit is the total transformation of the person and the way he/ she looks. It helps in a great way to counter the effects of aging on the body and removes the fat from the areas which cannot be dissolved by strict diets and workouts. Approximately about eight pounds of weight can be decreased for the patient using this treatment. No surgery will be as safe as Laser Liposuction Surgery which has zero risk factor. The main advantage for the person undergoing this treatment is that in most cases, the recovery time takes from two to nine days and he/ she can join his/ her daily work without any problem.

Complications: There are also some complications which arise with the treatment of Laser Liposuction Surgery. There will be a minute risk of infection which is very rare and is seen only in few people. Some patients also experience minor bruising and swelling which vanish after few days. All these side effects and complications can be removed if an experienced surgeon is consulted for the surgery. Although it cannot be considered as a medicine for the control of weight or obesity, this is one of the most advanced cosmetic surgeries which involves no blood loss or little loss. Thus, Laser Liposuction Surgery is an effective way to remove excess amount of fat from the body with minimum risk and maximum results to your utmost satisfaction.

This procedure can be used to shape many areas of the body like the tummy, thighs, hips, calves, cheeks, face, upper arms, neck, chin etc.

How to know if you are eligible for liposuction?

The exact eligibility criteria may vary from person to person, however, all surgeons across the world will keep certain guidelines in mind while taking up a patient for liposuction. These are:

    • Current weight – Liposuction should not be confused for a weight loss treatment, it is about reshaping the body. The amount of fat that can be removed through these techniques has certain limits based on various medical factors. So the candidate must be within 30% of its ideal weight. Overweight people are usually not considered good candidates as there can be severe complications on removing fat beyond the limit.
    • Skin elasticity – Though this procedure mainly targets the fat under the skin, the condition of the skin needs to be accessed. Any person who has very less skin elasticity may not be able to proceed with this surgery as your skin will not be able to adjust to the new shape being given to the body.
    • Medical conditions – Anyone who wants to go through any cosmetic surgery must be in good health. For liposuction, some medical conditions make a person ineligible for the procedure. These are conditions like diabetes, hypertension, having artificial implants like pacemakers or defibrillator, consuming blood thinners, and any other serious medical condition. Women who are pregnant or nursing are also not eligible for this. While deciding if you are eligible or not, a full medical history must be taken and analyzed from you.
    • A healthy diet and exercise routine – Although this may not exactly be an eligibility criterion, it is suggested for anyone wanting to undergo this treatment to maintain a healthy lifestyle before and after the surgery.

If you are eligible and have decided to get liposuction done then the first thing to do is find a good surgeon, and go for a consultation. Liposuction is performed by plastic surgeons and they must be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Ask all the questions you may have regarding the surgery, the preconditions, precautions, and risks. This is also a good time to discuss the cost of the procedure. Your medical examiner will ask you for a detailed medical history to ensure that no unforeseen risks arise during the surgery itself.

    After the surgery

Liposuction is not a major surgery which requires you to be hospitalized for days post op. In most cases, the patient is released on the same date. There are a few things that you must take care of after this procedure.

    1. Wear loose and comfortable clothing on the day of the procedure and after that for a few days.
    2. It is common for some fluids to leak even after the surgery, so have reasonable arrangements made like towels etc. in abundance.
    3. The physician will ask you to wear a compression garment for a few days after the surgery. This helps in reducing swelling and quick recovery. Ensure that you wear this till and as the doctor has advised.
    4. You must keep your body active, which does not mean that you need to exercise after surgery, however, you must move every two hours or so to ensure that no blood clots are formed. Consult your doctor on any specific activity you should or should not do post op.
    5. Showering after the surgery should also be done as advised by the physician, in most cases the doctor will ask you to avoid taking a shower for at least twenty-four hours. Public pools, beaches or any non-running form of water activity should be avoided for a couple of weeks. While cleaning the area which has undergone surgery is best cleaned by a wet towel.
    6. The incisions that are made for the surgery must be kept clean and dressing may be removed as suggested by the doctor. In case you see anything abnormal like infection or redness immediately contact the physician.
    7. It is possible after surgery you may not want to eat much, however, keep yourself hydrated and take the medication prescribed by the doctor.

What to expect and what not to expect after liposuction

One of the main reasons any one of us would undergo this procedure is to sculpt your body in the shape you want. So what you can expect is a better-shaped version of you. However, many people think that once liposuction is done the fat will not return. That is not true. If you not take care of your habits and indulge in a healthier lifestyle, the new fat cells can return and hence you will regain weight. Liposuction, as explained earlier, is not a weight loss technique and hence you need to eat right and exercise to maintain the shape you have received from it.

A major side effect of liposuction which many people do not foresee is the cellulite. Depending on how elastic your skin is you may experience more or less dimpling of the skin. Liposuction will reduce the fat, however, the skin which has stretched around the fat will not change. If you have good elasticity in your skin it will realign to the new shape after fat removal, however, if the skin elasticity is not good then it will result in the cellulite and skin dimpling. For such situations, doctors prescribe a combination surgery of liposuction and cellulite removal such as tummy tuck. If the cellulite is less then, some non-surgical medicinal methods may be explored to reduce it.

Another post-op effect which may not last long is surgical scars. Although liposuction is quite a non-invasive surgery, there are incisions or multiple punctures made in the skin from where fat is being removed. These may leave some scars which can fade over time. These can also be the cause of minor discomfort like pain and swelling in the recovering days.
